Bethlehem Steel Mill History. Bethlehem Steel landed a federal government contract to roll uranium fuel rods for nuclear reactors at the Lackawanna plant from 1949 through 1952. The company prospered in the 1950s, producing about 23 million tons of steel per year as the plants in Germany and Japan lay devastated from World War II.
