Generally, the sand or gravel in a river or lake will be formed from the local rocks and stones. So if your tank contained large slabs of granite, then a granitic gravel or even fine sand would be a perfectly appropriate substrate. But if you were using slate as the dominant rock type, then dark, volcanic sand would be the substrate of choice.
